Cargill’s Soy-Based BiOH® Products to be featured in The Progressive Farmer’s Idea House and Farmstead

House brimming with sustainable strategies, design ideas and products opens Sept. 19

Sept. 16, 2008 - MINNEAPOLIS – Foam cushioning made with Cargill’s BiOH® soy-based polyols is among the “green” features of the 2008 Idea House and Farmstead opening in Lake City, Minn., Sept. 19. The Idea House is sponsored by The Progressive Farmer, a monthly magazine focused on the business of farming. This year’s home, the company’s sixth, showcases sustainable products, local trades and materials and architectural design sensitive to water and energy conservation.

Polyols are traditionally made from petroleum and used to make flexible foam cushioning for furniture and mattresses. BiOH polyols are made from soybean oil and found in cushioning of several leading furniture and bedding manufacturers. They allow users to reduce dependence on foreign oil and shrink their carbon footprint while supporting new uses for farm products.

LEE Industries provided four chairs for two seating areas in the home that feature Preserve™ foam cushions and arm padding made with BiOH polyols. The frames are made from certified, responsible wood choices, and the springs are made from 80 percent recycled metal. In addition, the frames are coated with a water-based finish.

One of the mattresses in the home is from the The Perfect Contour Green Collection, a new product line by Comfort Solutions that will reach retail stores this fall. The BioFlex™ Hybrid foam used in this mattress is also made with BiOH polyols. The mattress is covered in 100% natural fibers and made with natural latex—a renewable material from the sap of rubber trees.

“We are so pleased to be a part of The Progressive Farmer’s Idea House and Farmstead and want to thank our partners that provided the furniture and mattress products made with BiOH polyols for the home,” said Jessica Koster, marketing manager for Cargill’s BiOH Polyols. “We believe the innovation and creativity showcased in the home encourages all of us to see firsthand that green living can indeed be comfortable, stylish and desirable.”

Admission to the home costs $5. The home is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. from Sept. 19 through Oct. 19, 2008. The house is closed on Oct. 5. General admission tickets can be purchased for $5 at the house. A resource room with free information, materials and ideas from sponsors is available at the location.
