Healthier Choice Offers Greener Carpet Cushioning Products Using BiOH™ Polyols from Cargill

BiOH polyols land “cushy” partnership with maker of carpet and flooring underlay. One new product will soon be featured in big box home improvement retailer stores located on West Coast.

Jan. 26, 2008 - MINNEAPOLIS - Healthier Choice, a premium carpet cushion manufacturer, will use BiOH™ polyols, a soy-based ingredient in greener foam production, to offer a more responsible, greener choice in cushioning for carpet and flooring. Derived from natural vegetable oils such as soybean oil, BiOH polyols can deliver unique performance benefits while helping customers reduce their environmental footprint and market themselves to downstream customers.

Healthier Choice, an environmentally conscious maker of functional foam underlay, sees a partnership with BiOH polyols as a logical step. The company is now integrating the use of BiOH polyols throughout their total product line, including Healthier Choice Carpet Cushion®, Foundation Contract Carpet Cushion, and Sound Solution™ Premium Acoustical Underlayment.

Use of the BiOH biobased foam ingredient has allowed Healthier Choice to extend the sustainability of its products and build on its customer base. Beginning this month, a new product will be featured in a major big box home improvement retail chain’s stores located on the West Coast. The brand name is Platinum Plus ECO carpet cushion, and packaging will include the BiOH logo.

“Incorporating BiOH polyol foam underlayment is a positive step for retailers and consumers who want sustainability, eco-friendly features and greener options to incorporate into homes,” says Healthier Choice President Craig Poteet. “We are thrilled to become the first carpet cushion manufacturer to partner with BiOH Polyols from Cargill to further reduce our carbon footprint and create a healthier living environment for consumers.”

A preliminary life cycle analysis indicates that replacement of petroleum-based polyols with BiOH polyols results in 36% less global warming emissions, a 61% reduction in non-renewable energy use, and a 23% reduction in the total energy demand. Every million pounds of BiOH polyol produced to replace petroleum- based polyols avoids the use of about 2,200 barrels of crude oil.

At Healthier Choice, chemists perform the same tests that the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) perform while inspecting textiles for harmful bacteria and organisms. Their environmentally friendly and functional mechanically frothed high-density cushion products are designed to create a healtheir indoor living environment.
