LOHAS: Is a New Consumer In Your Future?

Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) highlights community development and the advancement of issues relating to health and sustainability. The Natural Marketing Institute is closely watching and reporting on greenbizconsumer response to these issues. It cites 35 million adults in the U.S. who have a meaningful sense of environmental and social responsibility and incorporate those values into their purchase decisions. NMI labels this 16 percent of U.S. adults as LOHAS consumers and predicts that this $200 billion-plus industry is on track to grow to $420 billion in just three years and could climb as high as $845 billion by 2015. Arecent study by Landor Associates, Cohn & Wolfe and Penn, Schoen & Berland found that with British consumers‚ concern for the environment is quickly transforming buying habits. Green awareness “is now almost the unquestioned norm” causing “the swiftest shift in consumer attitudes” says Phil Gandy of Landor Associates, a consulting firm that participated in the study. In just one landoryear, embracing green philosophy and behavior has triggered buying habits even faster than the trend of mobile phones, Gandy says, and buyers are easily influenced by company messages.
